The water heater at Home Depot is not the same as what a licensed contractor installs. Here's what the difference is and which brands are worth your money.

The short version: for tank water heaters, Bradford White is the contractor's choice. For tankless, Navien leads the field. Neither brand is available at Home Depot or Lowe's, and that's not a coincidence.
Here's the full breakdown, including what's actually different between a contractor-grade unit and a big-box store unit that might look identical on the spec sheet.
Bradford White is the only major water heater manufacturer that sells exclusively through licensed plumbing and HVAC contractors. No retail distribution, no big-box stores. The reason: they believe installation quality matters enough to restrict the channel to professionals.
What you get with Bradford White:
Installed cost in Philadelphia: $1,800–$2,600 for standard 40–50 gallon gas models. Power vent or direct vent configurations run $2,200–$3,100.
A.O. Smith makes contractor-grade and retail-grade water heaters. The contractor-grade ProLine XE and Signature Premier series are solid units with 9–12 year warranties, blue diamond glass lining, and good parts availability. Installed cost is similar to Bradford White. Their retail-grade units sold at big-box stores are a different product line with different specs.
Rheem has both contractor and retail distribution. The Professional series (sold through contractors only) is a good product with 12-year warranty options. Rheem is the parent company of Ruud, so parts are shared across both brands. For areas where Bradford White supply is tight, Rheem is a solid alternative.
McCorry primarily installs Navien combi boilers, which provide both domestic hot water and space heating from a single wall-hung unit. The NCB series handles both jobs with one piece of equipment, eliminating the need for a separate water heater and boiler. For homes that only need hot water, the NPE tankless series is also available. Key advantages for Philadelphia-area homes:
Installed cost: $7,700–$11,500 depending on venting configuration and whether gas line upgrades are needed (tankless units require higher BTU input, often 3/4" gas line vs. 1/2").
Rinnai is a strong competitor to Navien. The RL and RU series are well-regarded, widely installed, and have excellent tech support. Rinnai uses a copper heat exchanger with a scale-detection system. In Philadelphia's water hardness range, this performs well with annual flushing. Installed cost is comparable to Navien.
Noritz makes reliable tankless units at a slightly lower price point. Less brand recognition than Navien or Rinnai but a solid track record. Good for budget-conscious customers who still want the efficiency benefits of tankless.
The Bradford White and A.O. Smith units at Home Depot are not the same as the contractor-grade versions. The retail versions typically feature:
A big-box 50-gallon gas water heater might run $1,050 at retail. A contractor-installed Bradford White of the same capacity might be $1,800 total including labor. The extra $800 buys you 3–5 years more service life, a better warranty, and a unit that a licensed professional sized and connected correctly.

Bradford White sells exclusively through licensed plumbing and HVAC contractors. This is a deliberate quality control decision: they want their equipment installed by professionals who can size it correctly and set it up properly. The result is a better product with better warranty support.
Bradford White tank water heaters typically last 12–15 years with annual anode rod inspection. Their commercial and power vent models often run 15–20 years. The all-brass drain valve and heavier glass lining contribute to longer life compared to big-box alternatives.
Yes. Navien is McCorry's preferred tankless brand. The NPE series uses a stainless steel heat exchanger (not copper, which is prone to scale buildup in PA's moderately hard water), has built-in recirculation, and a condensing design that reaches 0.97 UEF efficiency. Installed cost in Philadelphia runs $7,700–$11,500.
Big-box brands use thinner tank walls, shorter warranty periods (typically 6 years vs. 9–12 for contractor-grade), and lighter-duty components designed to hit a retail price point. They also use plastic drain valves instead of brass. The tanks often fail 3–5 years earlier.
Tank water heater replacement in Philadelphia typically costs $1,550–$2,900 installed for a Bradford White or A.O. Smith. Navien tankless runs $7,700–$11,500 installed. Factors include tank size, venting type, and whether gas line or electrical upgrades are needed.
