Wayne is one of the most architecturally diverse communities on the Main Line. Along Wayne Avenue, Conestoga Road, and the streets near the SEPTA R5 corridor, you'll find everything from 1920s–40s stone colonials and Tudors with gravity hot water heat and no central air, to 1950s–60s ranch colonials with original gas systems, to newer construction in developments like Chesterbrook off Route 202 with modern two-stage heat pumps. We've been working in these homes since 2001 and understand the full range.
Older Main Line homes present specific HVAC challenges that require experience. The stone construction and thick walls that make these homes beautiful also make ductwork routing difficult. Many have oil-fired systems — boilers or furnaces — that were never converted when gas became available. Some have zoning systems added decades ago with zone valves and dampers that require careful diagnosis when problems arise. We're comfortable with all of it.
The oil-to-electric heat pump conversion is one of the most significant HVAC projects we do on the Main Line. For Wayne homes with existing ductwork, a dual-fuel heat pump — which uses a heat pump as the primary source and keeps oil or propane as backup for the coldest nights — is often the cleanest transition. It keeps your existing infrastructure largely intact while dramatically reducing operating costs. For homes without ductwork, or where ductwork is in poor condition, a whole-home ductless system from Mitsubishi or Fujitsu eliminates the problem entirely. These systems handle both heating and cooling with no combustion fuel required.
Ductless mini-split installation is increasingly common in Wayne for a specific reason: the older Main Line homes here often have outbuildings, carriage house conversions, finished attic spaces, or additions that were never connected to the main HVAC system. Running ductwork to these spaces is costly and disruptive. A single ductless head unit with a short line set to an outdoor compressor provides both heating and cooling for these spaces with minimal construction work. We install Mitsubishi and Fujitsu systems for these applications regularly.
Central air repairs in Wayne most commonly involve capacitor and contactor failures on aging condensers (very common on systems over 10 years old), refrigerant leaks at evaporator coils, and systems still running R-22 that need replacing. We also service the multi-zone damper systems common in larger Main Line homes — zone boards, damper actuators, and thermostats. If your system isn't cooling evenly across floors or zones, that's usually the first place to look.

Aging oil systems in older stone colonials, steam and hot water boiler replacements, multi-zone system issues, and oil-to-heat pump conversions are the most common projects. For newer Chesterbrook-area homes, it's typically standard AC repairs and system upgrades.
Yes. Larger Main Line homes often have multi-zone systems with separate air handlers for different floors or wings. We design, install, and service these systems, and can add zoning to existing single-zone systems.
Yes. Oil-fired furnaces and boilers are still common in older Main Line homes. We service, repair, and replace oil systems, and handle oil-to-heat pump conversions for homeowners wanting to eliminate oil entirely.
Yes. Ductless mini-splits are popular in Wayne for carriage house conversions, finished attics, additions, and home offices. Mitsubishi and Fujitsu systems provide both heating and cooling with minimal installation disruption.
