Navien vs. Bradford White Tankless Water Heaters: Which One Is Right for Your PA Home?

Two brands come up constantly when Philadelphia-area homeowners start shopping for a tankless water heater: Navien and Bradford White. Both have strong reputations. Both are brands we install and stand behind at McCorry Comfort. But they're not the same unit, and for your specific house, one is likely a better fit than the other.

Here's a straight comparison based on years of real installs across Montgomery, Bucks, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties.

The Short Version

  • Navien NPE series: Top-tier efficiency, built-in recirculation, great for larger homes and whole-house demand
  • Bradford White Infiniti: Workhorse reliability, simpler serviceability, excellent for homes wanting a straightforward upgrade

Efficiency: Navien Wins on Paper

Navien's condensing technology squeezes more heat out of every cubic foot of gas — their NPE-240A2 carries a 0.96 UEF rating, among the highest in the industry. Bradford White's Infiniti condensing units sit around 0.93–0.95 UEF. Both qualify for energy tax credits. In practice, you'll notice the gap most in a larger household with high simultaneous demand — the Navien edges ahead.

Flow Rate and Capacity

Both manufacturers offer units sized for small to large homes. For reference:

  • Navien NPE-240A2: up to 11.1 GPM
  • Bradford White Infiniti GX: up to 10.0 GPM

In a 3–4 bathroom Philadelphia row home or colonial, either unit handles simultaneous showers without issue. If you're running a large household with a dedicated master bath, soaker tub, and back-to-back morning demand, Navien's higher ceiling is worth noting.

Built-in Recirculation

Navien's NPE-A2 series includes a built-in recirculation pump and buffer tank — meaning near-instant hot water at any fixture without a separate recirc loop. Bradford White's Infiniti can be paired with an external recirculation system, but it's not built in. For clients who hate waiting for hot water, this is often the deciding factor for Navien.

Serviceability

This is where Bradford White holds its own. The Infiniti has a straightforward service layout — parts are easy to reach, the error code system is clear, and replacement components are stocked by most supply houses in the region. Navien has improved significantly in recent years (the A2 series fixed most of the early reputation issues around the secondary heat exchanger), but Bradford White remains slightly simpler from a service standpoint. If your priority is a unit a local tech can diagnose without proprietary tools, Bradford White has a slight edge.

Warranty

  • Navien NPE-A2: 15-year heat exchanger, 5-year parts, 1-year labor
  • Bradford White Infiniti: 15-year heat exchanger, 5-year parts, 1-year labor

Essentially identical. Both warranties require professional installation and registration — we handle that for every unit we install.

Installed Cost

Installed prices vary by home layout, gas line sizing, and venting requirements. As a general range in our service area:

  • Navien NPE-240A2: $3,200–$4,200 installed
  • Bradford White Infiniti GX: $2,900–$3,900 installed

Navien runs slightly higher, mostly due to the unit cost itself. Both prices include permit, gas work if needed, and proper venting. The federal 25C tax credit (up to $600 for qualifying water heaters) applies to both — ask us for the efficiency certificate at time of install.

Which One Do We Recommend?

We install both brands regularly and don't push one over the other based on margin. Our call depends on the house:

  • Larger home, high demand, want instant hot water everywhere: Navien NPE-A2
  • Smaller to mid-size home, straightforward upgrade, budget-conscious: Bradford White Infiniti
  • Replacing an existing Navien or Bradford White: Usually stay with the same brand — parts history, venting, and gas line sizing are already matched

Bottom Line

Either unit will outlast a tank water heater by a decade or more when properly maintained. The difference comes down to your specific demand pattern, how much you value built-in recirc, and budget. We can walk you through the right choice during a site visit — no upsell, just the right unit for your house.
